Exemplary achievement: Wong (right) presenting the Excellent Student Award and certificate to student Wei Feng at his home in Bayan Lepas.
DESPITE diagnosed with muscular dystrophy since birth, 18-year-old Chong Wei Feng beat the odds and scored 8As in his SPM.
The student had been wheelchair-bound since he was in primary school.
The former student of SMJK (C) Phor Tay was handed the Excellent Student Award for his achievement by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary Wong Hon Wai at his home in Bayan Lepas, Penang, on Sunday.
He was one of 10 special needs students given the award by the Penang government.
Wei Feng, who is currently in Inti College on partial-scholarship, was a consistent top scorer who achieved 6As and 8As in the UPSR and PMR respectively.
“I wish to study medicine abroad someday. Writing is not a problem though I can be a little slow.
“I am grateful that my classmates and coursemates have always been helpful,” he said after being presented with the award.
Wong said Wei Feng missed the ceremony held in Komtar on June 21, which saw more than 300 top students receiving cash prizes and certificates, as he (Wei Feng) was hospitalised due to a lung infection at that time.
His parents, Chong Chee Choon, 45, and Ong Lee Ling, 45, beamed with joy over their eldest son’s achievement and expressed gratitude to the state for its kind gesture.
“We only want him to be healthy,” Chee Choon said.
